Culture Overview
Metro Denver is home to more than 300 non-profit art, theater, music, dance, botany, zoology and natural history cultural organizations. Combined, these organizations have a significant impact on Downtown’s community, economy, and quality of life.

Denver voters established the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD) “sales and use tax” in 1989 to support arts, historic and scientific organizations, generating $38 million per year and putting Denver on the map as a world-class cultural center.

-2006 cultural economic activity for totaled over $1.4 billion.

-14 million people attended cultural activities in 2006.

-6,100 new jobs have been generated by the cultural industry since 1997. 

-Nonprofit scientific and cultural organizations paid almost $95 million in wages to 10,800 employees.

The mission of DOCA is “to advance the arts and culture in the City and County of Denver.” DOCA programs include:

-Mayor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts - Recognizing individuals and organizations that have made significant and lasting contributions to the arts in Denver

-Doors Open Denver – tour of distinct buildings and unique places

-Audio Picnic – free music festival featuring local performing arts groups

-One Book, One Denver – a “citywide book club” that stimulates community building and discussion

-Poetry in Motion - Inspiring people in their everyday lives through poetry and art in public transit

-Create Denver - Supporting, promoting and growing the commercial arts sector in Denver

-Public Art – Engaging the public, informing the visitor and adding vitality to Denver’s cultural landscape
