At Noon on August 27th, you may have heard the words of Benjamin Franklin echoing down the 16th Street Mall. The Downtown Denver Partnership organized the first Democracy Read-Out, where students, residents and workers signed up to bring to life a little-known document, instrumental to our country's existence: Franklin's 1787 letter to the Constitutional Convention .
The Democracy Read-Out involved hundreds of volunteers who were asked to quickly align along the 16th Street Mall--flash mob style--and then read Benjamin Franklin's letter and the preamble to the Constitution of the United States, for dramatic effect.
About Benjamin Franklin's 1787 Letter:
At the last day of the Constitutional Convention, Franklin, a Pennsylvania delegate with international repute, wanted to give a short speech prior to the signing of the final draft of the United States Constitution. Too weak to actually give the speech himself, he had fellow Pennsylvanian James Wilson ultimately deliver the speech. Today the document is widely respected for its candor and eloquence by both political science and history aficionados.
"This letter is considered a masterpiece by many," said Tamara Door, President & CEO of the Downtown Denver Partnership. "This is an incredibly unique time in the history of our city. We felt one way of honoring this document would be to revisit it while we have so many visitors here and a city filled with national pride."
