Denver Art Museum for the Frederic C. Hamilton Building

The New Yorker calls the building “a thrilling affirmation of the idea that museums can be artworks as well as merely containers.” The Guardian notes that Denver has achieved “a unique, striking building that will attract visitors away from the coasts.”

However one chooses to experience it, the expansion of the Denver Art Museum with the Frederic C. Hamilton building has forever changed the way we think of civic design. As dramatic and dynamic as the city in which it lies, the new 146,000 square foot building, designed by Daniel Libeskind, expands the Museum’s gallery space by 40 percent, allowing the museum to exhibit more of its extensive holdings and to attract major new exhibitions to Denver.

More broadly speaking, the building is an exciting stimulus for economic development, redevelopment of the Golden Triangle neighborhood, and the enhancement of the arts and culture in Denver. What began as an art museum expansion has grown into the development of a wonderful urban composition, and renewed cultural vitality in our city.

Community partnerships were an integral part of the expansion from the beginning. The Hot DAM: Arts at Altitude campaign was created to support the opening of the expansion, and was successful in recruiting the participation of over 100 non-profit cultural organizations and art galleries, with over 250 cultural offerings throughout the city.

Clearly, our Mile High City has been given an architectural gem, the purpose of which extends far beyond the walls where art is hung. This visionary and bold expansion celebrates both art and architecture, while illustrating a region-wide dedication to our developing cultural climate.
