National Western Stock Show 100th Anniversary

For the last century, the National Western Stock Show has been bringing people to Denver to participate in a celebration of our western heritage. The attendees are as diverse as the livestock, and come from all over the state and world to see and exhibit horses, cattle, sheep, swine, goats, llamas, bison, yak, poultry and rabbits.

The 100th anniversary of this unique tradition was celebrated in 2006, attracting 727,000 visitors to Denver. Roughly $85 million was generated directly for Denver through the sale of tickets, retail items, lodging and food. The majority of out-of-town patrons stayed in downtown hotels, booking approximately 1,000 room nights.

In addition to being an economic engine, the National Western Stock Show frequently brings the excitement from the National Western Complex to the streets of Downtown Denver. Often referred to as the “Wall Street of the West,” Downtown’s 17th Street has the opportunity to illustrate this distinctive western character as the annual parade, including 30 head of Longhorn cattle and 100 head of sheep, makes its way through the financial district. The event is then complemented by the National Western Barbeque Lunch featuring live music and a western fashion show in the Wells Fargo Building atrium.

A variety of public and private western-themed events take place around Downtown Denver during the month of January, and the end of the stock show season is traditionally capped off by the appearance of the Junior Livestock Grand Champion Steer at the Brown Palace Hotel.

The National Western Stock Show reminds us of our western legacy, provides education, entertainment and commerce to downtown, and brings a variety of people to our city who might not otherwise visit. If the show’s founders had attended its 100th anniversary in 2006, they’d likely have popped a few buttons with pride.
