Elvis, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, David Bowie, Robert Redford and Nicholas Cage have one thing in common—each has been seen sporting the infamous line of clothing produced by LoDo’s Rockmount Ranch Wear both on and off screen. The evolution of this 60 year old family owned business extends back three generations, and illustrates the hard-earned success of those able to adapt to the changing needs of a consumer driven and technologically savvy society while maintaining an unwavering identity.
In 1946, Jack A. Weil (“Papa Jack”) rented a space at 1626 Wazee Street, and set about trying to create a fashionable yet practical identity for the western ranchers of the region. In 1954, Papa Jack’s son, Jack B., joined the company and expanded the product categories and markets across the U.S., and in 1981, third generation Steve Weil joined the company, substantially expanding Rockmount’s market internationally and over the internet. Today, Rockmount’s signature “Sawtooth Pocket” and “Diamond Snap” fitted shirts are considered to be the longest production style shirt in America, and have international recognition, along with other Rockmount paraphernalia.
In an industry with few constants, Rockmount Ranch Wear focused on a steady course. In addition to holding fast to their product line and design, the Weil family invested in the LoDo community, purchasing their building and undertaking significant historic renovation in 2005 to preserve its original state.
At the age of 105, Papa Jack is considered to be the oldest living CEO in America today. He remains well known for coining the phrase, “the West is not a place, it is a state of mind.” The spirit of this statement can be felt when you walk through the doors of his store today, which reminds us of the past unique to our city, and the heritage that sets us apart. The story of Rockmount Ranch Wear illustrates an entrepreneurialism and courage exemplifying the spirit in which the West, and the pioneers who forged ahead, came to settle and find ultimate success in uncharted territory.
