In the mid-eighties our economy was in a recession, and our city and its downtown leaders searched for ways to revitalize our struggling downtown. Ultimately, the transformation of the physical face of Downtown, as well as its spirit, can be attributed, in part, to the tenacity of Susan Powers.
As former Executive Director of the Denver Urban Renewal Authority (DURA), Susan Powers can be credited with the historic rehabilitation of the Denver Dry building, the Denver Pavilions, the Tattered Cover / Mercantile Square redevelopment, the Adam’s Mark Hotel, and many more defining projects.
After leaving DURA to start a small development company, Susan turned her attention to yet another passion - affordable housing. She remains a vocal advocate for the provision of workforce and student housing as a backbone of economic stability. Each of her projects has served a community purpose that expands the benefits far beyond the traditional commercial development.
The 2007 Downtown Area Plan focuses heavily on the connection between the Auraria Campus and Downtown Denver. Susan Powers has proven that this both real and perceived gap was worth bridging through the creation of the first downtown student housing project of this scope on the Auraria campus. The Campus Village project is transforming the nature and experience of student life on the Auraria campus, adding a critical element to the Downtown mix.
Passionate in all that she does, Susan has been active in many community activities and causes. She is a Board member with Habitat for Humanity, Denver Urban Land Conservancy, the Colorado Historical Foundation, the Woman’s Forum, and co-chair of the Downtown Denver Partnership’s Housing Council. She is former Chair of the Women’s Bean Project.
In additional to building a successful real estate development company, Urban Ventures, Susan Powers exemplifies the integration of public service and business acumen for the greater good.
