The 16th Street Urban Design Plan is continuing under the direction of a diverse team of consultants from across the country. Planners, designers, architects and experts in a number of fields have spent the past months studying, surveying and assessing the Mall's existing conditions. They have analyzed its successes and shortcomings through research and extensive survey of residents and business-owners. After collecting and analyzing their findings, the consultant team (led by ZGF Architects of Portland, Oregon) has created three possible options for improvement. The steering committee will select a preferred option along with a preferred furnishings palette in August of 2010, which will be presented to the public for input. A draft urban design plan will be created after the August meeting and will be distributed for public comment in November. The final urban design plan document is expected to be complete by the end of November 2010.
These alternatives drive to preserve the original integrity of 16th Street, maintained by consultant Laurie Olin, one of the original designers of the mall. The changes expand upon the Mall's successes and update it as recommended by the 2009 in-depth Technical Assessment. This includes enhancing efficiency and accessibility, allowing the Mall to continue to thrive long into the future.
