What is Arbor Day and Why Should You Care?
With Earth Day quickly approaching on April 22, the Downtown Denver Partnership is excited to share ways for you to help us build a greener downtown. Hear from our resident tree expert and Sr. Specialist for Downtown Environment Amanda Miller about Downtown’s upcoming Arbor Day celebration, an annual event that supports the care and promotion of our downtown trees. Interview conducted by Colorado Community Media (The full interview will be posted on our blog soon). 1. How long have you been hosting arbor day events? This is the second time we’ve hosted Downtown Arbor Day. We’ve been involved in the care and promotion of our downtown trees for a long time, with programs like the Urban Forest Initiative, the Downtown Denver Business Improvement District’s Tree Health Program, and initiatives outlined in the Downtown Area Plan.
2. What is the importance of Arbor Day? Trees are so important to Denver and Denverites. Most people know that trees clean our air and provide shade, but they do so much more than that! Studies have shown that businesses on tree-lined streets have higher income streams, that increasing tree canopy correlates with a decrease in crime, and that people are less stressed when in the presence of trees. The Downtown Denver Partnership, alongside the City and County of Denver and the Downtown Denver Business Improvement District, are working hard to grow a forest in our center city through the Urban Forest Initiative, but we can’t do it alone!
Arbor Day to be a day of fun – come out with your coworkers, friends, and family – and just enjoy an afternoon of music, beer, games, and giveaways downtown.3. What do you hope attendees will gain/take away from this event? We hope people gain an appreciation for trees, not just in their own neighborhood and not only for their natural beauty, but also for trees in our downtown and for their measurable impact on our built environment, economic resiliency, and personal wellness.
