Statement from the Downtown Denver Partnership on Violence in Downtown

Over the weekend, Downtown Denver experienced a series of senseless acts of violence that left two dead and two seriously injured. We are horrified by the events that took place, and our thoughts are with the victims, their families, and all of those who have been impacted. While we take comfort in knowing that the suspect has now been apprehended thanks to the extraordinary efforts of the Denver Police Department, and that it is believed that the suspect acted alone, this tragedy remains undeniably devastating to all of us at the Downtown Denver Partnership.  We commend the Denver Police Department (DPD) for their swift response that ultimately led to the arrest of the suspect. DPD mobilized robust resources immediately and will continue to prioritize securing downtown. There will also be an increased police presence downtown beyond the investigation to ensure a heightened sense of security.  A safe environment is of the highest importance to all of us at the Downtown Denver Partnership, and we – together with our partners at DPD and the City – remain wholly focused on the safety of our center city. We do not tolerate violence of any kind downtown, and as a community, we must continue to unite against all crime.  Significant public and private safety and security resources are dedicated to the 16th Street Mall and surrounding area, and for the near future, DPD will keep additional resources focused on the area. Now, more than ever, we need your stewardship of and commitment to Downtown Denver. Please help us and our partners by deferring to the Denver Police Department for all facts related to this case and, if you see suspicious behavior, please call 911 immediately.  We urge you to continue to champion downtown alongside us. In the face of this unimaginable tragedy, we must come together in pursuit of a safer downtown for all.
